Meet the Team
Our team is the heart of the Tipton County Museum Bird Fest. Each person brings their unique and experience and knowledge to the table. From Wildlife officers and park rangers to retired agriculture teachers and wildlife photographers. We have a lot of individuals that have spent their lives dedicated to birds, other wildlife and the great outdoors. Our volunteers are the backbone of the festival, and they work hard to make sure everything runs smoothly. They are always on hand to answer questions and share their love of birds with everyone they meet.
Director, Tipton County Museum, Veteran's Memorial and Nature Center
Katherine Markley
Katherine serves as the director of the Tipton County Museum, Veteran's Memorial, and Nature Center. With a passion for service and a commitment to making a difference, she has been actively involved in various local initiatives aimed at improving education, community service, and preservation of history. She holds a board member position at the Covington-Tipton County Chamber of Commerce and Fort Wright Historical, Inc. Katherine has a background in economic development and post-secondary education attainment. She actively supports the community and volunteers as much as possible, believing in the value of giving back in any capacity. As an enthusiastic bird watcher and outdoor lover, she champions the education and appreciation of nature. Katherine is excited to make the festival an unforgettable event and warmly invites you to the Bird Fest to discover the splendor of nature and its marvels.

Naturalist, Tipton County Museum, Veteran's Memorial and Nature Center
Sherl Rose
Sherl is a naturalist at the Tipton County Museum, Veteran's Memorial and Nature Center. She is the club leader for the Nature Journaler's Club. She is an avid birder, gardener, and butterfly mom! She is an amateur lepidopterist, as she has rescued and released several different species of butterflies, on many occasions, including the endangered monarch butterfly. she will be giving lectures on Backyard Birds, bird feeder and bird house maintenace, pollinators and their habitats, and how to become a Certified Watchable Wildlife Habitat.

Julie Hartsfield
Julie is a children's author, wildlife, nature, and urban style photographer, and owner of Julie Hartsfield Photography. She serves as a board member and longtime volunteer at the Tipton County Museum, Veteran's Memorial and Nature Center. She is a member of Duck's Unlimited and Tennessee Wildlife Federation. She is a certified hunter safety instructor and a longtime volunteer for the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency, and an active community volunteer. Julie brings together her passions for writing, birds, and photography through her leadership and involvement in local birding programming, including the development of community birding events, the creation of ongoing educational content such as daily bird features on the festival Facebook page, and the founding of the Tipton County Birdwatchers Club.She is a board member of the Hatchie River Conservancy. Her dedication to the Hatchie River is reflected both in her conservation efforts and in her writing, including a children's book inspired by the river and it's significance. She is an avid birder, gardener, and outdoor enthusiast. She is a proponent of conservation initiatives and the preservation of natural and historical heritage.

Dexter Hartsfield
Dexter has dedicated many years to volunteering at the Tipton County Museum, Veteran's Memorial, and Nature Center. He serves on the board of the Hatchie River Conservancy and has volunteered extensively with the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency. His commitment to community service is unwavering. Professionally, he works as a Field Service Technician for Shred-Tech, a company at the forefront of the shredding and recycling industry.Dexter has dedicated many years to volunteering at the Tipton County Museum, Veteran’s Memorial, and Nature Center, where he has been actively involved in supporting education, history, and conservation efforts within the community. He also serves on the board of the Hatchie River Conservancy, where his deep appreciation for and commitment to the Hatchie River guide his efforts to help protect and preserve this vital natural resource. He has contributed countless hours volunteering with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, including his role as a certified hunter safety instructor. He is alsoa member of the Tipton County Birdwatchers Club. A passionate advocate for the outdoors, Dexter enjoys spending time in nature and is deeply committed to conservation and responsible stewardship of wildlife and natural resources. His enthusiasm for volunteering reflects a genuine desire to give back to his community and to help preserve the natural spaces that make West Tennessee unique. Professionally, Dexter works as a Field Service Technician for Shred-Tech, a company at the forefront of the shredding and recycling industry, where he applies his technical expertise and strong work ethic. His dedication to both his career and his community service reflects a lifelong commitment to hard work, conservation, and making a positive impact.

Turner Game Birds
Ted Turner
Ted has been a longstanding member of Leigh's Chapel Community, where he and his wife Carolyn, married for 63 years, raised their two sons, Mike and Charles. Ted, along with his wife Carolyn, and Mike have owned and operated Turner Game Birds for 23 years and continue to do so now with a host of grandkids, and great grandkids. He raises cattle, sheep, quail, pheasant, and chuckar. He earned a Bachelor of Agriculture from the University of Tennessee at Martin in 1965, then returned to Turner Angus Farms, established in 1854. In 1968, he started teaching agriculture at Covington High School, retiring after 39 years. His wildlife management class constructed an observation deck in the wetland area of our museum trail. He also helped found the Covington Clay Target Trap Team. A certified auctioneer, Ted performs for organizations like Ducks Unlimited, Wild Turkey Federation, and Delta Waterfowl. His memberships include Ducks Unlimited, Quails Unlimited, Pheasants Unlimited, Tennessee Cattleman's Association, Tennessee Farm Bureau, and Tipton Farmers' Cooperative (Greenpoint AG), among others. He was instrumental in creating Covington's first swim team and served as a certified lifeguard. He has always been a very active member of our community, whether through the schools, cattle and shows, or various committees. Ted will deliver a lecture on quails, their habitats, and conservation, and will lead a quail walk on his farm. An avid outdoor enthusiast and wildlife management expert, he has dedicated his career to teaching wildlife and environmental management and conservation. We are honored to have him on our team.
Environmental Educator| Content Creator| Singer| Songwriter
Keith Paluso III
Keith is a birder, naturalist, content creator, musician, former professional natural resource manager, and Tennessee State Park Ranger with 10+ years' experience in environmental education. In 2008 he began his career as an Interpretive Ranger for Tennessee State Parks. in 2013 He became a Tennessee State Park Ranger. In 2018 he became a Natural Resources Manager and the Ranger Division Director for the city of Germantown Parks and Recreations. He was on Season 15 of NBC's the Voice. He is currently the lead singer of 3x Grammy-winning jazz/rock fusion band Blood, Sweat, and Tears, where he actively tours. In 2020, due to social distancing, concerts were shut down. He then went back to work as a Park Ranger for Meeman Shelby State Park. He now lives in Munford, TN with his family, pets, and an enormous collection of plants and bird feeder stations.

Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency
Jake Yoes
​Jake, with 20 years of experience as a Tennessee Wildlife Resource Officer, is a passionate outdoorsman. Born and raised in Obion County, he has dedicated 17 years of service to Tipton County. He serves as a board member of The Hatchie River Conservancy and he is a dedicated volunteer for the Tipton County Museum, Veteran's Memorial and Nature Center. He's also an advisor for the Tipton County 4-H Wildlife Club, and a member of the Tipton County Birdwatchers Club. Jake has dedicated his life through his professional career and everyday volunteering to the conversation and protection of Wildlife and the environment. We are proud to have him as a part of our festival.

Hatchie River Conservancy
Bob Ford
​Bob serves as the interim director of the Hatchie River Conservancy. As a retired US Fish and Wildlife Service Officer, he has dedicated his career to the Hatchie River's environmental concerns. An expert birder, enthusiastic hiker, and outdoor aficionado, Bob will share his birding experience with us throughout the bird festival as a guide on many of our bird hikes.

Park Ranger, Fort Pillow State Historic Park
Tyson Weller
As a Park Ranger at Fort Pillow State Historic Park, Tyson is passionate about inspiring visitors to take a deeper look at the natural world and the history of the park. He's excited to be leading the kickoff bird hike, which is sure to be a great way to experience some of the incredible birds that can be found there. He’ll also be giving engaging lectures on Waterfowl Migration, Duck Banding, and Turkey Banding, and leading an educational snake program, backyard birding program, and sunset birding hayride and pontoon rides. Come join him and discover the beauty of this amazing park.
Park Manager, Fort Pillow State Historic Park
Robby Tidwell
Robby is the park manager at Fort Pillow State Historic Park, He works to preserve the beauty and historical significance of Fort Pillow State Historic Park, while also providing visitors with an engaging outdoor experience. Fort Pillow has unique scenery that you won’t find anywhere else, like hiking trails and historic sites that are perfect for all skill levels. The park features camp grounds, a fishing lake, picnics and a play area. When you visit Fort Pillow State Historic Park, you’ll come away with a greater appreciation and understanding of the beauty and history of the outdoors.

Watt Wallace
His love for birds and nature has led Watt on some very exciting adventures, as he travels the country photographing nature and wildlife. He is an accomplished wildlife and nature photographer. He loves to spread his knowledge as an expert birder with fellow enthusiasts. From leading walks at bird festivals to teaching photography workshops, He is passionate about sharing his love for wildlife and photography with others. He takes the conservation of our natural world very seriously and strives to use his photography as a means to bring attention to the issues affecting our planet.

Liz Reed
​Meet Liz, an avid birder and enthusiast who spends her days exploring the beauty of WMA's and State Parks through birding and kayaking. As a registered Behavioral Technician, Liz works with children with autism. She advocates passionately for equal outdoor accessibility for all, and serves as a Birdability Captain where she leads birding events for people with disabilities.she has a deep commitment to conservation and the preservation of wildlife habitats. Inspired by her grandmother, she is egar to share her love for birding with future generations and has traveled far and wide to purse her hobby. She is a lead member of the Tipton County Birdwatchers Club, and an avid volunteer at the Tipton County Museum, Veteran's Memorial and Nature Center.

Jay Hartsfield
​Jay is a Wildlife, Nature, and Urban Style Photographer, and owner of Captured Wild Photography, as well as a Machinist by trade. He is a dedicated volunteer for his community and is always eager to lend a hand. He has volunteered with the Hunter Safety Program for the local Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency for many years. He is a longtime volunteer for the museum. He enjoys birding, and anything to do with nature. His future plans include the pursuit of a degree in Wildlife Biology with a special interest in wildlife management and conservation. Jay has worked diligently as a volunteer for the bird festival with advertising, sponsorships, construction, and maintenance. We are excited to have him as a volunteer.

Clay Hartsfield
Clay is a cherished volunteer at the Tipton County Museum Bird Fest and a lifelong contributor to our community, always ready to offer assistance. His journey of service began in childhood with local fundraising activities. With his extensive knowledge and enthusiasm for nature, he has dedicated many years to the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency, as a volunteer. His expertise in the outdoors is channeled into conservation and sustainable environmental stewardship. He is a member of Duck's Unlimited. His affection for animals shines through his volunteer work at the Tipton County Animal Shelter. Additionally, he has devoted countless hours to community safety and cleanup operations after storms. As a proficient welder, and equipment operator, Clay's skills have been invaluable in preparing for the festival at the museum. We are honored to have such a committed and generous individual on our team.

Jo White
Jo is a passionate outdoor enthusiast dedicated to preserving nature for future generations. From her commitment to her work at Brown Dog Lodge Veterinary, where she deeply cares for animals, to her volunteer efforts at a local fire department. As a key volunteer at the Tipton County Bird Fest, Jo is determined to make a positive impact in her community. Her diverse contributions reflect her love for the environment and her desire to inspire others to join her in making a difference.

Cindy Anne Day
Anne started her volunteer service while still in high school as an Explorer Scout at the Covina Fire Department and worked as a Candy Stripper at San Dimas Hospital where after high school she became Nurse’s Aide. She joined the Navy Delayed Enlisted Program in 1980, afterwards attending Naval Training Center (NTC) San Diego for Mess Management Specialist (MS) “A” School. She worked at both the NTC and Recruit Training Command galleys. In 1982 Anne was an MS3, and attended MS “C” school, Baking and Decorating school, MS Records school, and Leadership, Management, Education, and Training school. She spent 2 years overseas at the Naval Communications Station Harrold E. Holt, Australia, where she was promoted to MS2. In 1984 she returned to San Diego for duty on board USS DIXON (AS-37), at Port Loma. She then served at Naval Amphibious Base Coronado, becoming a MS1. In 1989, she served at Patrol Squadron 17 (VP-17) Naval Air Station (NAS) Barbers Point in Ewa Beach, Hawaii, NAS Adak, Alaska, and Naval Support Facility Diego Garcia, located in the Indian Ocean. She retired to Millington in 1992 where she joined the reserves and was stationed with Patrol Squadron 67 (VP-67) until it was decommissioned. She then returned to the healthcare profession and worked as a medical assistant for twenty-nine years before retiring in 2021.
For her service to our country, Anne was awarded Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with Gold Star, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy Good Conduct Medal with two Bronze Stars, National Defense Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal with Bronze Star, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Navy and Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon, and Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendation with letter “O”. Anne is the Commander of the Tipton County Ray Pinner Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 4840, the first woman to command a VFW Post in West Tennessee. She is the treasurer for the Tipton County Veterans Council and past treasurer for the Military Women Across the Nation, Memphis Belles Unit 151. ​Outside of the military she has also volunteered as a girl scout leader, and as a longtime volunteer at the museum where she is always ready to help anywhere, she is asked. We are very proud to have her as a volunteer for the bird festival!

Brian DeGuzman
Brian recently joined our museum as a dedicated volunteer. With a passion for nature, he came to explore our trails and was inspired by a group of volunteers already hard at work. Without hesitation, he jumped in to lend a hand and has been a constant presence ever since. His commitment and enthusiasm make him an exemplary volunteer, and his love for the great outdoors shines through in everything he does.
